After a long civil war, the Communist Party of China declared independence in 1949. On October 1st, Mao Zedong announced the founding of New China at Tiananmen Square. In 1949, the new government declared October 1st as National Day.

How Do Chinese Celebrate?
Mainland China, Macau, and Hong Kong celebrate with fireworks, concerts, and cultural activities. There's a flag-raising ceremony at 6 am at Tiananmen Square. Leaders pay tribute to martyrs. There are also evening galas with patriotic performances, fireworks, and exhibitions. It's a great time for shopping with discounts.
