Doubling Capacity: Honeywell Scales Dangote to 1.4M BPD

Scaling to 1.4 Million BPD: The Engineering Roadmap
Doubling production at a facility that is already the largest single-train refinery in the world is no small feat. By 2028, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery aims to reach a throughput of 1.4 million barrels per day. For us in the engineering field, this means more than just adding pipes; it requires a total optimization of the process flow. Honeywell’s suite of refining technologies will allow the plant to process a much wider variety of crude grades, providing the operational flexibility needed to navigate volatile global markets while maintaining high-yield outputs.
Maximizing ROI through Integrated Process Technology
One of the smartest moves in this expansion is the decision to leverage existing infrastructure. Rather than a "rip and replace" strategy, the project focuses on maximizing the return on investment (ROI) of the current Lekki assets. By integrating Honeywell UOP’s advanced catalysts and equipment, the refinery can accelerate its timeline to market. From an automation perspective, this involves fine-tuning control loops and power management systems to handle increased loads without compromising the Euro-V quality standards of the gasoline and diesel being produced.
The Oleflex Advantage: Advanced Propylene Production
Beyond fuels, the expansion targets the high-value petrochemical market. Dangote will license Honeywell’s Oleflex technology, a specialized process that converts propane into propylene through catalytic dehydrogenation.
Technical Note: This process is critical for producing the building blocks of modern plastics. The upgrade will allow the facility to produce 750,000 metric tons of propylene annually, bringing total polypropylene production to 2.4 million metric tons.
For an automation engineer, the Oleflex unit is a masterclass in temperature and pressure control, requiring precise logic to manage the catalytic cycles effectively.
Enhancing Energy Security through Automation Maturity
The collaboration between Honeywell and Dangote is a strategic response to Nigeria’s energy needs. By reducing reliance on imported fuels, the refinery strengthens local energy security. However, operating at this scale requires a high level of "Automation Maturity." The use of Honeywell’s proprietary equipment and digital services ensures that the refinery can maintain operational excellence even as complexity increases. We are looking at a future where integrated Distributed Control Systems (DCS) manage every facet of production, from crude arrival to final product dispatch.
A Benchmark for the Global Downstream Industry
With over a century of experience, Honeywell’s involvement provides a layer of technical "insurance" for a project of this magnitude. As this facility evolves into the world’s largest petroleum refinery, it sets a new global benchmark. For those of us in the industry, the Dangote-Honeywell partnership serves as a case study in how long-term collaboration—spanning nearly a decade—can lead to groundbreaking industrial achievements that move entire national economies.
